What makes good furniture?

We all have it and we all use it, but some of us place more importance on furniture in our homes. What makes a Chippendale stand out from another piece of nice furniture isn’t just the name. Of course the name can add that extra finesse to the piece, but you have to delve into the history of furniture making to understand how makers such as this built up their name and reputation. An apprentice in the olden days could take between seven to ten years to be considered anything like worthy of the title junior carpenter. It took years more to hone their skill into an art that produced the finest shapes, colours contours and fretwork that combined into a masterpiece.

Egyptian cabinets are still the fashion

Although the early origins of furniture is almost impossible to determine, the records that the Egytians left in both writing and drawing evidence are probably the best examples of serious attempts at making the living quarters a little more appealing. The burial chambers of royalty and wealthy merchants have revealed so much. The most basic early forms were merely wooden poles with a stretched with a covering of matting of fibre and wood which bodies were laid out in. Later came boxes for storing food and ornaments and eventually cabinets made of wood, metal and gold. Many of the early forms of design are still copied today.

When it’s all going pear shaped, get the hammock out

Hammocks have been around a long time and performed more basic and needful tasks than their present day role of relaxation. Of course we all know of the pragmatic use they performed on sailing ships down the ages; what better way of counteracting a rough sea whilst trying to get you four hours of much needed sleep between watches, not to mention the deck space they saved. Hammocks have also been used in countries with hot climates to ensure any crawling insects on the ground were kept from harm’s reach. Nowadays we can just relax to the gentle sway with peace of mind and no real other reason.
